ANGELA DUTRA DE MENEZES Translated
by John D. Godinho
I'm a carioca* from Ipanema, and I say it with no false modesty. Those who know the city of Rio de Janeiro, will understand my pride. As
a child, I liked reading so much that I learned how to write with a
special flair. The outcome
was predictable: I had no choice, so
I ended up as a journalist. I built my career in the Segundo
Caderno, the cultural supplement of O
Globo, a Rio newspaper, and I called it quits as a journalist for Veja
magazine. I
didn't go counter to the tenets of my generation: I married and unmarried.
I have five little tykes who are not so small any more and who are the
love of my life. I
have traveled all over - and I continue doing so.
After graduating from the College of Social Communication at the
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, I went on to study at the University
of the Republic of Panama and at the University of Georgia, in the United
States. I still entertain the
thought of continuing my studies. My
biggest fear is to become a birdbrain someday. I
have written five books: A
Thousand Years Minus Fifty, Santa
Sofia, The Other Side of the Picture, The Portuguese Who Begot Us (A Trip
to the World of Our Ancestors) and The
Book of the Apocalypse According to a Witness. The first one was
translated into Spanish and became quite smug with the wonderful reviews.
The second and third books came within an inch of winning a Jabuti
Prize. The fourth one was
considered one of the best Brazilian books in the year 2000.
As for the fifth, well...you'd better read it quickly before the
world comes to an end. I'm a happy person, I do what I like. I have friends, I enjoy my children, I laugh a lot, I listen to music, I read, I write and I love to travel. Could
anyone ask for more? ___________________________________________________________ He
